The lighthouse

Thunder clapped as the rain cried and cried. Storm clouds huddled together, deep in conversation. The ocean swallowed up more of the golden banks on the deserted beaches, becoming more like a monster with only a mouth. Lightning raced through the sky, which seemed like an endless gray. It was a stormy night, a very stormy night. 


Matt woke up with a start. Images flashed through his mind. Storm. Water. Floods. Lightning flashed, thunder boomed. His eyes widened in terror as he looked outside his window. 


Storm.. 


Taking a deep breath, he whisked away the thought. Probably just a summer thunderstorm, he thought, even though it's October. Sweaty, damp, and breathless, he tried to go back to sleep. He wrestled the sheets, fluffed up his pillow, and even tried counting sheep. But nothing worked. He decided to just get up and wait for morning. But then, he saw something. A waft of light, drifting up the curled stairs. As soon as it was there it disappeared. And everything crumpled in darkness.
